◦ Tada Shinya wrote the lyrics to Kaze no mukou e! Was happily surprised when I saw his name on the credits. Congratulations Tada-san on your first A-side (and such a high-profile one at that!).
You
know...I was so cranky during my junior days...Well, there's the fact
that I was young and immature, but I was a junior from 2nd year in
middle school to 3rd year in high school, so it was kind of like
wasting my so-called youth, wasn't it? There were too many things I
couldn't do, like hang out with friends after school at the shopping
district --- my friends could do it, but I couldn't. When I leave home
in the morning, there'd be fans waiting outside the house, and when I
go home from work or school, they'd follow me all the way...I was so
cranky about a lot of different stuff. But after I became part of
Arashi, I completely stopped minding at all. Instead of thinking,
"There are too many things other people can do that I can't," I thought
the opposite: "I'm doing a lot of things that other people can't do." I
began to recognize the positive side of it. The fans say, "Arashi songs
cheer me up," and I think, "I've gotta work hard." Yes, it makes me
very happy. It makes me realize that I'd never get to experience any of
these if I didn't have this job. That's why I thought, it's no big
deal, I should just enjoy the ride despite not being able to do some
things. I didn't mind that much anymore. I think that's what changed
after I became part of Arashi --- I didn't mind anymore
the...restrictions of being famous. As much as possible, I want to keep
it real. I'm glad these five particular guys make up Arashi.
You know...I'm what you call a lion at home but a mouse abroad. All along I've thought of myself as just shy (laughs). But about half a year ago I realized, "Am I not really just tough on my own turf?" (laughs). I'm not really shy; I have no problem talking with people I've just met. But, there are only a handful of people whom I can completely open up myself to. That's why, my true colors come out when I'm hanging out with friends I've known for a long time. I can speak my mind with the members too. During our junior days, Matsumoto was like a younger brother to me, but lately the five of us have come to be on an equal footing, haven't we? I feel like I'm saying this all the time, but lately, it's really good with us. Even in the movie, the most fun scenes are the ones when the five of us are together...Yeah, I'm glad I'm with members which can make me feel that way. I mean, setting aside whether we get along or not, or that maybe, just maybe, there's some other group out there where I can feel at home, the fact is that we are that kind of group, and I'm glad. --- Do you want to further explore newscasting?
Of
course, as long as they let me. It's extremely interesting, and there
are many times when I think that I'm glad they're letting me do it, but
I'm not thinking of specializing only in newscasting. I'm an idol
(laughs). I'm in Arashi.
--- If I may venture to ask, is Arashi big right now? (laughs)
A
lot of people tell us that, but I really don't know (laughs). I don't
know whether we're getting big or not, but I do think it's getting
interesting, because I really feel that the other members are doing
work that could only be done by them and not anyone else. There are
more ways for us to express ourselves, be it Ohno's exhibition, or my
being a newscaster......I think the people around us are making it more
interesting for us, because things couldn't be done just by ourselves. I think it's only just recently that the general public has
come to see that too.
--- Do you feel it in your skin?
Hmmm......well, I don't not feel it, to be honest.
--- When do you feel it?
............I
guess when the five of us are together. We'll be talking, and I'd just
suddenly look at it from an objective point of view......Matsumoto
Jun, Ninomiya Kazunari, Aiba Masaki, Ohno Satoshi --- wow they're in
the same room.
--- Like, why are you in the same room, when each of you has gotten big (laughs).
We're still ridiculously goofy as usual though (laughs). But I think it's a good thing.
--- You yourselves have remained the same, yet everything around you is rapidly changing, isn't it. How do you deal with those changes?
The
more things around us change, the more important it is for us not to
change. If we change, then there would be no point in being us. It's
not as if the public just all at once turned to look our way. I think
it's more like people glanced in our direction from time to time, and
gradually began to see us clearly. I guess it's important not to
stray in order not to let go of that attention.
--- During
24HOUR TELEVISION in 2004, Aiba-san read a letter to the members
saying, "Let's definitely make our dream of becoming the top come
true". What exactly do you think this "top" means?
Hmmm............I
wonder. But I think it's not about the numbers. It's not about drawing
the most number of people to concerts, or selling the most CDs; I think
it's about being loved. It's probably about wanting to be loved by
everyone (laughs). It's like, yes, we want to reach the top of the
mountain, but when we get there, our fans will also be there together
with us. We want to be a group which can make one proud to say that
they are Arashi fans.
--- Do you yourself feel proud that you are part of Arashi?
Yes,
I'm proud. That has never changed. No, it's not something that I
finally thought of just now, and whether everyone knows it or not,
indeed, Arashi is precious. [cut, July 2008] ♥

Among
the three of us, I'm the one older by a year, so it seems like I'm the
senpai, right? But it's actually MatsuJun who has been a junior the
longest. When I became a junior, the first time I went to dance
lessons, he kindly taught me the dance steps. At first my impression of
him was, "He sure is small~. I bet he still can't ride the roller
coaster at amusement parks" (laughs) But now, we're like the same
height. His looks have also become more mature...The other day, I just
happened to watch Bokura no yuuki, and MatsuJun's face back then was completely round
(laughs). I didn't notice because we're always together, but he really
has changed, both inside and outside. A long time ago, there was a
Dragonball poster in MatsuJun's room, and I thought it was cute of him,
but it's probably not there anymore. Speaking of MatsuJun's room, his
clothes and stuff were all messily scattered about, so much
that I was worrying over where I should sit (laughs). Me, I only have
the bare necessities in my room, and I make it a rule not to bring
unnecessary stuff in, so I was really surprised when I saw that room.
That's not good~. We have to clean up sometimes!

Wink up, circa 1997

I've
never acted before. During school arts festivals, I was always the
lighting guy. It's a role nobody really wants, but it's actually deep
and interesting, because the feel of the stage completely changes
according to the lights. The actors I like are Ishida Issei-san and Sorimachi Takashi-san!
In the future, it would be great if like them, I could become an actor
with a strong personality, whose presence can be felt just by being on
screen. One thing I'm happy about lately is being able to go to New
York for a Wink up shoot! It was so much fun! We went to lots of
different places riding the location bus. It was all for the magazine
story, but it was fun and hardly felt like work. The one thing I
remember the most is...Nonaka-kun's * one-man conte
(laughs). He's like talking all the time. He makes lame jokes, but
slowly and strangely, we begin to find them funny (laughs). The details
of our New York trip will be in next month's issue, so look forward to
it!

Blood type: AB. Height: 164 cm. Weight: 48 kg. Shoe size: 27 cm.
* an ex-junior
Didn't know the four of them were called J-Boys (short for Johnny's Boys) before MAIN. And Toma admired Sho-kun?
The
other day I was asked by a girl, "Are you the junior Matsumoto
Jun-kun?" I was so happy! I mean, Matsumoto-kun's face is so cute,
isn't it?...The one I admire among the juniors is Sakurai-kun!
And wah MatsuJun so cute (this MatsuJun doesn't exist anymore lol):
We've
always gotten along well, but I'm happy that since the [junior] radio
show has started, and the stage play decided, we've become closer! Ah,
but that guy just had me in a stranglehold a while ago (laughs). (Ninomiya-kun faces here and flashes a peace sign)
Concerts are also fun! I mean, even though it's fun to just be dancing,
Aiba-kun and Ninomiya-kun next to me would always be making me laugh.
And during this year's spring concert, I was praised by the dance
teacher! For me who is always getting scolded by name, this is such big
news. Stage experience? I have...at our school arts festival, and a bit
part at that (laughs). I only had a few lines, but this time won't
definitely be at that level. I think that as long as I give it my all,
even though I look like this, I'm a pretty quick learner. Anyway, I'm a mass of willingness and motivation this time around, so it's definitely gonna be okay! But you know,
if I mess up during the actual show, don't strangle me, Ninomiya-kun!

Happy 27th birthday, Leader! Sorry for the belated greeting >< Er this is so not timely anymore (it's Aiba-chan month already!), but here's the last for Ohno Satoshi month, which is from Nino's guest appearance on bayfm ON8 (Onpachi). They had a corner where he was asked to compare the other members to something (Ohmiya moe~). Ohno Satoshi month was fun, thanks for reading! Will catch up and reply soon:
mp3: Arashian Files
Aiba-chan → Chinese [food], then Ramenman
Why: the family business. Nino said that for lunch that day, they had food from the Aiba family restaurant, from gyoza, chili shrimp, to fried rice. They were brought by Aiba-chan's father himself, whom Nino calls by his name Katsuhisa.
MatsuJun → spaghetti
Why: Bambino. Nino: "I think he looks good in any role."
And then Leader:
How about Ohno-kun?
Ohno-san... *long pause* ...everything about him...
Everything about him...
Is weird.
Hahahahaha you're not comparing at all!
No, really, everything about him is weird.
Everything?
Well
I don't know if he's weird in the typical way, but that's what I think.
Right now we're in the last stages of our concert rehearsals,
and...he's like...always wearing a t-shirt that says Hell Taxi.
Hahaha what?! It says that? It says Hell Taxi?
Yup, and when I say "Taxi!", he'd like come over.
Hahahahaha!!! *claps*
We're like doing that the whole time, so Jun-kun would get angry at us. He'd go, "Get serious, will ya?" Me and Ohno-san, we end up fooling around most of the time, so during rehearsals we're made to dance on opposite ends from each other.
Away from each other.
Yup, but whenever we take a break, when I call out "Taxi!", the taxi would come over. Since we end up playing like that, I tell him, "Then don't wear it!" I mean, in the first place, what the heck is a Hell Taxi? Also, he'd always say, "I'll take you to hell today too."
[At this point the DJ is laughing her butt off]
We normally do stuff like that, but I'm thinking most people would find it weird. I mean, if you get into a taxi for real and the driver says, "So, shall I take you to hell today?" You'd be surprised and want to get off, right?
Haha of course, obviously!
You'd think, "Ack, I've gotten into a weird one!"
Yup, exactly.
If you think of it that way, the way that guy thinks is, well, a bit unique. I'm thinking it's sorta rude to call him weird, so maybe it's better to say unique.
Sho-kun → stone
Why: his strong convictions. For Ichimen!, they'd have a meeting around Thursday or Friday, and until then he'd be reading about three different newspapers everyday, comparing and contrasting them, and even on the set of YamaTaro he'd be reading them early in the morning etc. etc. etc. *the talk gets serious*
[At this point the DJ has stopped laughing and is now all serious]
I
think he's really amazing...er, Sho-san's gotten serious and all, so
shall we cut this part out? Apologies to Sho-san, but let's focus on
Hell Taxi!
Hahahahaha!!!
Well,
the person called "Leader"...lately it's really getting to be a
nickname. Basically it's Sho-kun who leads. And during concerts, it's
Jun-kun.
Everyone's got their own roles, in a balanced way.
And during variety shows it's me or Aiba-san.
None of you really overlap each other.
Yes, but who would have thought that after eight years there'd be a taxi driver. And the biggest mystery is that he's the only one who doesn't have a driver's license. All he's got is a PASMO.
Hahaha but despite that he'll take you to hell!
★
Other
interesting stuff: it was Sho-kun who came up with the name Time
for their album, but Nino, Leader, and Aiba-chan came up with other candidates, like: "What's a piglet doing here?" → "Since there's
a pig, let's name it Olympig." ^^;;; I searched for the shirt and found
these (seems like a fashionable and expensive brand):
Hope it's not too late to join Ohno Satoshi month:
scan: theahhmoment
from Satoshi to Masaki
Since I spent a long time in Kyoto, it was rare for us to even see each other during our junior days. (Sho-kun who is next to him says, "You thought Aiba would be more gentle?") Yup, but basically he's composed, don't you think? Aiba is 17 this year, right? That about him is like me when I was 17 (laughs). He's also got a soft image, and I've never seen him angry. Oh right, I'm going to make Aiba angry and tell all about it in next month's issue! (laughs) Just kidding. Aiba-san, let's get along well with each other for the meantime (laughs). What, Aiba's blood type is AB? ...Aiba-san, do you have a split personality? (laughs)

I'm beginning to think the fanmen are starting to outnumber us lol. Kanasugi Fumio is a 55-year old broadcasting writer (he has worked with his favorite Sho-kun before). He became an Arashi fan when someone invited him to the Gaisen con last January (he's a Vegas fan, and he wrote that Arashi's set-up could probably rival Cirque du Soleil's lol), and since then he's gone to the April and October Dome cons, watched Haikei, Bambino, and YamaTaro, etc. etc. etc. Most striking is Mr. Kanasugi's firm belief in...Arashi's potential political power (!).
On the AAA DVD (limited ed of course) which he got so engrossed in watching that he actually forgot to attend a meeting:
What is most amazing is that these young Taiwanese and Korean women have been following and loving them for eight years.
While it has become a borderless world, there are many Koreans who say that they hate Japan, and it was hard to imagine that they would call out a Japanese idol's name so ecstatically like that.
Despite this, the union of Japanese idol and Korean youth came into reality so splendidly.
The idol power that makes possible, through the bodily expressions of song, dance, and talk, what even important politicians and scholars could not quite achieve.
I remembered the words of Professor M*, who was also there at their Tokyo Dome concert during Golden Week: "What amazing power. If only we could beam it to politics..."
While watching the DVD, I also began to think that maybe the idol is actually the one who can exercise the greatest political influence.
Not that I'm saying that we should use their popularity for political propaganda.
For instance, if their show, and the documentary that reflects their true selves can be broadcast in the countries of Asia, the scary image of the Japanese that their young people have would likely change considerably.
And when the youth changes, the country also changes, so the more power the idol has, the more this image will change.
Come to think of it, the idol group that is Arashi not only has the idol potential, but they might also have the potential to better the image of Japan!...Maybe I'm exaggerating a bit...?
*I think he's referring to the main caster of NEWS ZERO, Murao-san (a former government official)
On their latest Dome concert:
Today, Japan is being tossed about with great force in the whirlpool that is "Time".
The manner of its contribution to the world. Its leadership as the forerunner of Asia.
Yet with each passing year, with politicians at the forefront, these adults stray more and more, and their words and actions continue to become less serious.Under such circumstances, the performance that Arashi offers to their fans, with their honest words, song, and dance, seems like it's really resonating in their hearts.
If we could concentrate their power and pour it into peace and environmentalist activities and such, it might really be possible to "change the times", like Sakurai-kun said.
To the people who say that politics and entertainment are on different dimensions. And to all the politicians who have yet to see an Arashi concert. For the love of learning, I encourage you to enjoy it once.
Well, because it's amazing. It makes me want to wager on the possibility.
I love stalking fanmen; they write stuff we don't XD
This was their first time to do an audio commentary, except for Sho-kun who got to do one with Hachikuro. Some cute parts I remember:
Aiba-chan and Kashii Yu are together by the river:
Nino: Did you talk with each other, Aiba-san?
Aiba-chan: We did.
Nino: What did you talk about?
Aiba-chan: Kashii-chan said she likes motorcycles. I told her I like them too!
Nino: But you don't.
Aiba-chan: ...Yes.
*snickers*
Aiba-chan: It was to keep our conversation going! I tried my best!
MatsuJun: Kashii-chan will be shocked to hear this!
The five of them are drinking together:
Inudou: Do you really get like this when you're drunk, Aiba-kun?
*laughs*
Sho-kun: More or less.
Aiba-chan: Not like that! But yeah, I do cry when I get drunk.
Inudou: Really?
Nino: He gets all emotional by himself.
MatsuJun: He'll immediately start saying, "Ah, we're such lucky guys..."
Aiba-chan: "I'm glad I'm in Arashi..." I cry like that.
Inudou: So you cry by yourself.
Aiba-chan: Yes...Inudou-san, let's have a drink together sometime.
*laughs*
Nino is drawing his manga with the scarecrow:
Sho-kun: That manga is one of the special features of the DVD box, right?
Inudou: You sure know a lot.
Sho-kun: I'm an Arashi fanatic.
Leader is having his breakdown:
Inudou: Is it any different from when you're working with other actors?
MatsuJun: Not when we're actually acting, but it's clearly different when we're like in our dressing room.
Nino: I can say that when the five of us work together, we don't get to make any new friends.
*laughs*
Sho-kun: Because we get by with the five of us.
End credits:
Inudou: This movie was made possible because I got to know you guys. Thank you very much.
Other interesting bits:
- The stray dog actually had a leash, and they had to erase it through CG.
- The scene where Leader first meets his crush was shot at Shakujii Park. Sho-kun says that he was the only one filming on that day, and after that they went to Music Station to perform Kitto daijoubu. Director Inudou decided to cast the girl who plays the crush when he saw her in a TV spot for Remioromen's song Konayuki.
- It took a while for director Inudou to notice that Nino is left-handed. He thought, "This is bad! Wouldn't it be weird that a guy who eats with his left hand draws manga with his right?" He was seriously worried about it, but eventually rationalized it when others assured him, "There are really people like that." Nino explains that his family owns a factory; he was told that he would inherit the place, and so was made to learn to write with his right hand (easier to draw plans/diagrams equipment-wise).
- The mouse is real, not CG.
- The scene where Leader and Aiba-chan see off Nino at Shinjuku Station was shot at Hibiya Park. They had a hard time shooting it because Sambomaster was having a concert next door at the Open-Air Concert Hall, so lots of modern-dressed people were passing by.
- The weird kimono girl (also MatsuJun's girlfriend in Imakiyo) was actually wearing contact lenses. Director Inudou didn't notice until he watched the dailies, and they had to erase it through CG.
- The scene where MatsuJun goes to return the magazines to Kashii Yu was not originally in the script. Director Inudou decided to include it so that the surprising turn of events in the end would be more convincing.
- Leader's letter to Nino at the end is in his own handwriting.
This was my first time to listen to an audio commentary from
start to end, for another two hours (only for Arashi would I do this
lol).
p.s. charurei, your new tagline reminded me of something Mr. Nakamura (the pr0n writer/director fanman) wrote, which might convince you to change the = to a >
XD: he got mail from a former pr0n actress, who is known to be a very
troubled person who cuts/slashes herself all over...but! She has become
an Arashi fan through YamaTaro: "...listening to Happiness every week
cheered me up so much, and I've started listening a bit to their other
songs...it's not just their looks; everything about them is cool! It
really is so unexpected of me. I've lost, in a good way, to Arashi."
Sasuga Arashi. He's so surprised because she sounded like a normal, happy girl, and wonders if it is the Arashi effect (me: absolutely --- as dunadan puts it, it's Arashiawase).
Btw Mr. Nakamura and Yoshikazu-chan (the writer fanman) have finally bonded together (took them long enough lol) and are now Arashi blog buddies (like us!).
